Women's Triathlon Training Program (WTTP)

FIT conducts a six-week novice triathlon training program for women 18 years and over leading up to the annual Women and Girls' Triathlon (WAG-tri). An information evening for the 2009 event will be held on

Thursday 4 December at 7pm at THE GRIFFIN CENTRE (GENGE ST, CIVIC)

Come along and hear about the training program, which this year will include
- 6 weeks of training in each of the 3 triathlon disciplines, beginning 12 January 2009
- 5 education seminars
- entry into the women and girls’ triathlon (WAG-Tri) on Sunday 22 February 2009
- membership of FIT

For those relatively new FIT members this is an excellent well-balanced program where you will receive an enormous amount of support and encouragement from a terrific group of coaches.

The cost of the training program is $230 for non FIT members and $190 if you are already a FIT member.

Testimonial From Ange Barr - FIT Member and WAGTri Enthusiast

Have you ever thought 'I'd love to be able to have a go at achieving something as awesome as a Triathlon - but I'm not a triathlete'? Well, believe it or not we are all harbouring an inner triathlete. Whilst I'm not suggesting that all of us who have a bash at these things should expect that we're going to be the next Emma Snowsill, (though I'm not suggesting we might not be either..) I can tell you that in Canberra, every year, dozens of women of all ages, sizes, backgrounds, and abilities achieve this dream by participating in the Women and Girls Triathlon (WAGTri).  The race is a females only triathlon that this season is scheduled for Sunday the 22nd of February 2009.

The WAGTri is run by the Canberra based organisation Females in Training (FIT).  I've been a member now for a year, and I love it. One of the main events for FIT for the year is the WAG Tri, not only do they host the event, they also run a six week triathlon training program leading up to the event which will prepare you, at your level of ability, to compete in the WAG Tri in late Feb. This season the program starts on the 12th of January (now if that's not a good way to kick off that New Years resolution I don't know what is).

Now if the word 'compete' is daunting, don't be turned away as the goal of FIT, and the WAG Tri is participation, and ultimately the only person you're competing against, is yourself. Because your program friends, whether they finish 10 mins ahead, or 10 mins behind, really don't' care, because they too have finished, and at the end of the day that's what we're all about. Achieving a goal.

I did the program last year, and I can tell you this,

If you can't swim - they will teach you, there are Level 1 swim coaches and you will be in a group of your own ability.
If you don't have a 'racing bike' - who cares? If its' got 2 wheels, and has been serviced by a bike shop, (heck, borrow it from your neighbour) then you're good to go.
If you're not a runner - no mind, walk in the beginning, build yourself up, you'll be in a group with people of your own ability and you can achieve together.

And at the end of the program, you can do the whole WAG Tri yourself, long or short distance, or you can form a team with a friend and do one or two legs, it doesn't matter how long you take, if you walk your bike up the hills and walk the whole way in the walk/run leg. What matters is that you are there, and doing it.

So come on girls, take some 'me time' out of the office, out of the study, out of the daily grind, out of the perception that you have to be an athlete from birth to be a triathlete, and come and see! Because none of us are 'ordinary'; and women do triathlons too!!!

Apology: there was a system error in the swim results for the short course which has now been corrected.
