FIT-ability

FIT (Females In Training) has offered tandem cycling opportunities to vision impaired people for some years. FIT has a number of high quality racing tandems. In response to a request for support in this endeavour, Pedal Power has now come on board to assist FIT to offer tandem cycling to a broad group of interested riders across the ACT and surrounding NSW districts.

Tandem cycling is available to vision impaired adults and those with other disabilities who would otherwise be unable to cycle. In tandem riding a "pilot" rides up front and looks out for obstacles, steers, brakes, and changes gears. There are a number of experienced cyclists trained in tandem riding to pilot for a cycling buddy - or stoker, who provides the extra pedaling power.

New volunteers are always welcome, especially confident riders who would like to train to be tandem pilots.  We are also always grateful for assistance with transport - bikes or riders - and organisation.

We are always looking for new riders to pilot for disabled people. Anyone interested in supporting the project in any way should call or email Rosemary Robinson as listed below.

  • Stoker (the rider at the back), or

FIT-ability wins first prize in 2007 ACT Government inclusion awards

Congratulations to all those involved with FIT-ability...they have done it again!

For the second year FIT-ability has won first prize in the ACT Government inclusion awards that were held on Friday 2 November in our category (individual or team). A big thanks to all our volunteers who have worked tirelessly to keep making tandem bike riding available to disabled riders. Our work has been recognised. We will be out in force again with five tandems riding in the Tour de Femme.
