She's Game - Women Making Australian Sporting History

The Australian Women's Archives Project (AWAP) is pleased to announce that its new virtual exhibition 'She's Game' was launched on 20 June 2007 at www.womenaustralia.info
The new exhibition will be of interest to anyone who would like to know more about the stories and achievements of Australian sportswomen, coaches and administrators past and present. It tells the unusual stories alongside some of those that are more widely known and it covers many sports. Many new entries have been added to our biographical database of women as part of the project. The biographies are linked to information about archival and published resources thus highlighting many archival and library collections and encouraging further research.
You will find the stories of Isabel Letham, the first Australian to surf Hawaiian style in 1915, Jess Sams who won the Sesquicentenary Celebrations fishing contest in 1938, Betty Wilson the first test cricketer (male or female) to score 100 runs and take 10 wickets in a match, and many more.
The exhibition contributes to all of AWAP's current goals to be the premier access point for information and resources about women's contribution to Australian society to encourage women and women's organizations to protect their records and deposit them with collecting institutions to undertake and publish original research about Australian women's history to develop communities with an interest in Australian women's history by using emerging technologies AWAP is a project of the National Foundation of Australian Women in partnership with the University of Melbourne. 'She's Game' was developed by Dr Nikki Henningham. It was supported by a grant from the Australian Government Women's Leadership and Development Program.

National Foundation for Australian Women (NFAW)

The NFAW was established in 1990, with very broadly based objectives, which in summary are advancing and protecting the interests of Australian women in all spheres and ensuring that the aims and ideals of the women's movement and its collective wisdom are handed on to new generations of women.

Background: Its continuing existence is a tribute to the voluntary efforts of many women over the years, and to productive partnerships between NFAW and other women's organisations, and more recently partnering with a range of academic institutions. It currently has 4 main areas of focus: a Social Policy Committee which has been concentrating on commissioning research on the impact on women of the government's work choices policies, and is now working on proposals for paid maternity leave; the Australian Women's Archives Project which encourages women to preserve their records and make them more accessible; Women on Boards which helps experienced women gain directorships; and Women's History Month which each March celebrates the often forgotten roles and influences of women in history.

Join us: We rely on membership fees, donations (which are tax deductible) and the occasional grant to keep NFAW's work going. Membership is open to anyone interested in supporting the goals of NFAW. Donors can choose to make tax deductible donations to NFAW itself or to the other women's organisations and projects we support through our preferred donor arrangements.
