RUNNING

WEEKLY COACHED SESSION

Tuesday, 6.30-7.30am, Lennox Gardens (behind the Hyatt Hotel)

  • Just come along to the session and let the coaches know you're new to the group, if that's the case. Several different running groups meet here -- make sure you find FIT (we'll be the noisy gals!)
  • There are usually several groups to cater for different fitness levels and experience.
  • Sessions vary - sometimes there's a structured training program such as in the lead up to the City to Surf, at other times the sessions focus on skills such as hill running or interval training.
  • Here's the new program for January - April 2012

UNCOACHED SESSIONS

Saturdays, 7.30am - 8.30am

  • This is one of our most popular events - come along & meet other FIT members to run/walk at different locations around Canberra - check the front page of the website or the weekly Newsflash for details or get the current schedule here.

  • These runs/walks  vary in distance -- it's up to you to do what suits you.

  • Make sure you stay & join in when we adjourn afterwards for a long, loud breakfast!

  • All levels welcome - don't be shy & don't worry about how far you can run or walk - we all start somewhere and the Saturday morning run is a great way to do this!

Thursdays, 6.30am - 7.30am

Southside

  • This group runs the GGs circuit -- approx 7kms from Yarralumla Bay.
  • Meet at 6.30am sharp at the Yarralumla end of Hopetoun Cct, Yarralumla.
  • All welcome - followed by breakfast at Bees & Co at Yarralumla shops.

Northside

  • There's also a northside group which meet at the top of Philip Ave, Hackett - the run is through Majura Nature Park.
  • For those who want to go to brekkie afterwards there are lots of options at Dickson/Hackett shops.

RUNNING TIPS

Running Safely

To ensure you make it safely there & back here are a some safety ideas:

  • familiarise yourself with the route directions before the run by checking the schedule and looking at the map (if there is one)

  • run with a buddy if you can - especially if you are unfamiliar with the run and didn’t look at the map the night before!

  • carry water and/or food for longer runs, especially on hot days - and have a look at this info on how to Beat the Heat while you keep FIT

  • consider carrying a mobile phone

  • if you can't run with a buddy, let others know where you are going and how long you expect to take.

Saturday Breakfast Etiquette

  • Saturday runs attract a large contingent and this presents a number of issues.
  • Please be considerate about where you park – if we are running from a suburban shopping centre please don’t park in the car park right in front of the newsagent or local supermarket – leave these for local shoppers who will only park a few minutes while nipping in for the paper & bread.
  • Bookings are for breakfast for 25-30 people: with a group this size café owners expect people to eat breakfast - FIT confirms this will be the case.
  • Breakfast is booked for 8.30am - the cafe is aware there will be staggered arrivals. We tell the cafe the majority of people will be gone by 10am.
